Mk 677 or ibutamoren is a growth hormone secretagogue and agonist of the ghrelin receptor being researched as a treatment for reduced levels of hormones. A large trial in alzheimer's patients found a more patients with increased blood glucose levels in the ibutamoren group (15.4%) than the placebo group (4.6%), with similar differences in hba1c levels between the groups( 65 ). In a 2-month trial of ibutamoren in 24 obese males, fasting glucose and insulin levels were unchanged, whereas an oral glucose tolerance test showed impairment of glucose homeostasis at 2 and 8 weeks( 56 ). Hyperglycemia resulting from ibutamoren use has been observed in other studies as well( 48 , 49 , 64 ). Of note, no safety data examining malignancy and mortality rates are currently available for ghs's.

Ffm and total body fat were evaluated by a 4-compartment (4-c) model ( 13 ) and by dual x-ray absorptiometry (dxa) on a hologic qdr-2000 (hologic inc., bedford ma) in pencil beam mode ( 14 ). Some of the most commonly reported side effects are hunger increases after starting taking ibutamoren and water retention, but these side effects dissipate relatively quickly for most users. Normalization of gh release and the resulting increase in lean mass and reduction in fat mass may most significantly benefit obese individuals. In another study with 24 obese males, ibutamoren rejuvenated the growth hormone profile.

Ibutamoren (mk-677) is unique compared to other secretagogues because it is orally administered and remains active in the body for a longer period of time. Ibutamoren mimics the function of ghrelin, a natural secretagogue, helping to increase lean body mass. In studies that looked at how mk-677 increases muscle mass, the dosage was key.
